1. Deep Cervical Fascia Layers

The deep fascia is organized into specific layers that define compartments and create planes for surgical access or the spread of disease:
- Investing Layer: Encircles the neck; encloses the Trapezius and Sternocleidomastoid.
- Pretracheal Layer: Surrounds the thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, and the infrahyoid muscles.
- Prevertebral Layer: Passes behind the pharynx/esophagus; forms the floor of the posterior triangle and extends to form the axillary sheath.
- Carotid Sheath: Contains the Common and Internal Carotid arteries, Internal Jugular Vein (IJV), Vagus Nerve (CN X), and deep cervical lymph nodes.

2. Fascial Spaces

These spaces are clinically significant as they provide conduits for infection to spread into the chest (mediastinum):
- Pretracheal Space: Leads to the anterior part of the superior mediastinum.
- Retropharyngeal Space: Extends from the skull base to the upper posterior mediastinum.
- Prevertebral Space: Created by a split in the prevertebral layer; extends from the skull base down to the diaphragm.

3. The Posterior Triangle

Boundaries:
- Anterior: Posterior border of the Sternocleidomastoid.
- Posterior: Anterior border of the Trapezius.
- Base: Intermediate third of the clavicle.
- Apex: Superior nuchal line of the occipital bone.
- Roof: Investing layer of deep cervical fascia.
- Floor: Formed by muscles (bottom to top): Scalenus medius, Levator scapulae, Splenius capitis, and Semispinalis capitis.

Subdivisions:
The inferior belly of the omohyoid muscle divides this area into the large Occipital triangle (above) and the smaller Supraclavicular triangle (below).

Contents:
- Arteries: 3rd part of the Subclavian artery, Suprascapular, Transverse cervical, and Occipital arteries.
- Veins: Subclavian vein and External Jugular Vein (EJV).
- Nerves: Roots and trunks of the Brachial Plexus, Spinal Accessory Nerve (CN XI), and cutaneous branches of the cervical plexus (Great auricular, Transverse cervical, Lesser occipital, Supraclavicular).

4. The Suboccipital Triangle

Boundaries:
- Superomedial: Rectus capitis posterior major.
- Superolateral: Superior oblique of the head.
- Inferolateral: Inferior oblique of the head.

Structure:
- Floor: Posterior atlanto-occipital membrane and the posterior arch of the atlas (C1).
- Roof: Semispinalis capitis and splenius capitis.
- Contents: Vertebral artery, Suboccipital nerve (C1 dorsal ramus), and the suboccipital venous plexus.
