2. The Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) Muscle
- Origin: Two headsβthe manubrium sterni (sternal head) and the medial third of the clavicle (clavicular head).
- Insertion: Mastoid process of the temporal bone and the lateral half of the superior nuchal line.
- Nerve Supply: Motor supply via the Spinal part of the Accessory nerve (CN XI); sensory (proprioception) via C2 and C3.
- Action:
- Single side: Tilts head to the same side and rotates the face to the opposite side.
- Both sides: Flexes the neck forward.
