1. Cranial Nerve Origins in the Brain Stem

The brain stem contains the nuclei of ten out of twelve cranial nerves (excluding CN I and CN II):
- Midbrain: Gives rise to CN III (Oculomotor) and CN IV (Trochlear).
- Pons: Gives rise to CN V (Trigeminal), CN VI (Abducent), CN VII (Facial), and CN VIII (Vestibulocochlear).
- Medulla Oblongata: Gives rise to CN IX (Glossopharyngeal), CN X (Vagus), CN XI (Cranial Accessory), and CN XII (Hypoglossal).


2. Medulla Oblongata: External Features

Ventral (Anterior) Surface

Dorsal (Posterior) Surface

The dorsal surface is divided into two parts by the obex:
1. Closed Medulla (Caudal):
- Contains the posterior median sulcus.
- Features the gracile tubercle (medial) and cuneate tubercle (lateral), which overlie their respective nuclei.
2. Open Medulla (Cranial):
- Forms the lower part of the floor of the 4th ventricle.
- Inferior fovea: An inverted V-shaped depression.
- Hypoglossal trigone: Overlies the hypoglossal nucleus.
- Vagal trigone: Overlies the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus.
- Vestibular trigone: Overlies the inferior and medial vestibular nuclei.
- Inferior cerebellar peduncles: Thick fiber bundles connecting the medulla to the cerebellum (located lateral to the cuneate tubercle).


3. Pons: External Features

Ventral Surface

Dorsal Surface

Forms the upper part of the floor of the 4th ventricle.
- Facial colliculus: Located medial to the sulcus limitans.
- Superior fovea: A small depression located lateral to the facial colliculus.
- Upper vestibular area: Overlies the superior, lateral, and medial vestibular nuclei.
- Middle cerebellar peduncles: The largest of the three cerebellar peduncles, connecting the pons to the cerebellum.

5. Interpeduncular Fossa

A deep, rhomboidal space located on the ventral surface of the brain stem.
