1. Cranial Nerve Origins in the Brain Stem

2. Medulla Oblongata: External Features

Dorsal (Posterior) Surface
The dorsal surface is divided into two parts by the obex:
1. Closed Medulla (Caudal):
- Contains the posterior median sulcus.
- Features the gracile tubercle (medial) and cuneate tubercle (lateral), which overlie their respective nuclei.
2. Open Medulla (Cranial):
- Forms the lower part of the floor of the 4th ventricle.
- Inferior fovea: An inverted V-shaped depression.
- Hypoglossal trigone: Overlies the hypoglossal nucleus.
- Vagal trigone: Overlies the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus.
- Vestibular trigone: Overlies the inferior and medial vestibular nuclei.

3. Pons: External Features
Ventral Surface
- Basilar groove: A midline depression that houses the basilar artery.
- CN V (Trigeminal nerve): Exits from the lateral aspect of the middle part of the pons, marking the transition to the middle cerebellar peduncle.
- CN VI (Abducent nerve): Exits ventrally at the junction between the lower border of the pons and the pyramid.
- CN VII (Facial) and CN VIII (Vestibulocochlear): Exit at the cerebellopontine angle (junction between the lower border of the pons and the olive).
Dorsal Surface
Forms the upper part of the floor of the 4th ventricle.
- Facial colliculus: Located medial to the sulcus limitans.
- Superior fovea: A small depression located lateral to the facial colliculus.
- Upper vestibular area: Overlies the superior, lateral, and medial vestibular nuclei.
- Middle cerebellar peduncles: The largest of the three cerebellar peduncles, connecting the pons to the cerebellum.
4. Midbrain: External Features
Ventral Surface
- Crura cerebri (Cerebral peduncles): Contain descending motor tracts (corticospinal, corticobulbar, and corticopontine fibers).
- CN III (Oculomotor nerve): Emerges from the sulcus on the medial side of the crus cerebri within the interpeduncular fossa.
Dorsal Surface
- Tectum (Corpora Quadrigemina): Composed of four colliculi:
